Vijay Singh, former No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings, and is also known as “The Big Fujian”, admitted that he used Deer Velvet Antler Spray, a banned substance by the PGA Tour anti-doping policy.
Sports Illustrated reported that Singh is among the many athletes that are allegedly using a banned substance from a company called Sports with Alternatives to Steroids (S.W.A.T.S), which contains a particular ingredient known as IGF-1 or insulin-like growth factor.
According to a statement made by Singh that was released Wednesday, he never thought that the substance was actually banned by the PGA Tour. “While I have used deer antler spray, at no time was I aware that it may contain a substance that is banned under the PGA Tour anti-doping policy,” he said. “In fact, when I first received the product, I reviewed the list of ingredients and did not see any prohibited substances.”
“I am absolutely shocked that deer antler spray may contain a banned substance and am angry that I have put myself in this position. I have been in contact with the PGA Tour and am cooperating fully with their review of this matter.”
PGA Tour has warned players since in August 2011 about using any forms of Deer Velvet Antler due to its IGF-1 content. But, the use of this product has become one of the most trending topics these days when NFL Ravens’ linebacker Ray Lewis was among the athletes reported by Sports Illustrated to be using deer velvet spray.
Vijay Singh is scheduled to play in the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona.
